electrical issues with gauges and lights

hey - I have just purchased a 2012 Sweetwater 2286 tritoon with Yamaha 150 outboard. The nav lights work and the anchor light works and all the gauges work. But if I turn on the nav lights, the gauges react funny - no gauge lights come on and the fuel gauge will peg full and the voltmeter pegs far left to zero or whatever. I could only find one bulb and that was in the speedo - and that bulb looks fine. There are a few modifications under there, but the wires leading to the gauges all look pretty neat and original. Suggestions on where to look? I will take a picture under there and post later today.
